I Must Remember This: A Southern White Boy's Memories of the Great Depression, Jim Crow, and World War II Reviews

Product Overview

Joe, George, and Richard Youngblood, three white brothers growing up in the rural South during the Great Depression, live in a world of paradoxes: love and hate; doubt and faith; and sadness and humor.

In his poignant memoir I Must Remember This: A Southern White Boy’s Memories of the Great Depression, Jim Crow, and World War II, author George Youngblood shares stories about everything from the brothers’ first awareness of death, sex, and race to the truth about Santa Claus. They smoke rabbit tobacco, tremble at ghost and snake stories, watch haircuts for excitement, get baptized, and gawk at locomotives and alligators.

Hard times draw the Youngblood family closer to their father’s black farm workers. With one family in particular they form a symbiotic relationship in the hostile world of poverty, disease, and segregation. I Must Remember This is Youngblood’s family story as they hope, work, and laugh with little cause—and succeed with basic honesty, respect, and an astounding sense of humor.

A Memory at Large Reviews

Product Overview

A Memory at Large is the compilation of memories of a 67-year-old woman. These memories are based on truth as she sees it. She was inspired to write after the many encouraging side notes that Mrs. Parker had put on her writing papers at Mid-State College. She started writing short stories to give her daughter, Rose, an idea of what it was like to live in the late-forties. She had meant to only touch on the fun times, but as she wrote, she realized the not-so-fun times were creeping in and some of the stories were graphic enough to be upsetting to her, the writer, not to mention her daughter, Rose, also. She continued writing, thinking it would be therapeutic in some small way.

The Paw Paw Letters: Life Lessons for Aaron from A Good Place with Wise Folks During Hard Times. Reviews

Product Overview

The Paw Paw Letters, scenes of life values and process, combines humor, unimaginable real events, intrigue, plus surprise to visualize real folk just doing life in the 1940s and 1950s. The narrated epistles include parents venturing to discipline each other's children without fear of reprisal, volunteers aiding each other in times of pain and tragedy, and innovative ways to make do with what you have and make it through, all essential efforts for daily life and today worthy of practice if known.

The series of 35 messages, written to grandson Aaron, offer to him and other readers a link to a season quite different even to imagination in today's culture. More so, each value lesson of character woven into the epistles sounds an alert to American families vulnerable to the energies of greed, apathy, self purpose, and loss of integrity.

Growing Up Walla Walla Reviews

Product Overview

The Walla Walla O knew when he was young was a wheat and cow town in the remote southeastern corner of a remote northwestern state. Or at least the town and the state were remote when he grew up there. Perhaps Whitman college and its Conservatory made a difference, but its campus was only a place he pedaled by on his fly home from work, its museum a place to Visit once or twice a year, an auditorium where his mother sometimes sang. The men who influenced Oliver were a different breed. Those were the men fatherless Oliver grew up around. Weathered men, ready to drink up their week's wages, ready for a fight, men who took off their hats in the presence of a lady, and who would do business on a hand shake, they were part of Oliver's Walla Walla. That's why he wants to tell about them and about the two Walla Wallas.

Suttree (Modern Library) Reviews

Product Overview

By the author of Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses, Suttree is the story of Cornelius Suttree, who has forsaken a life of privilege with his prominent family to live in a dilapidated houseboat on the Tennessee River near Knoxville.  Remaining on the margins of the outcast community there--a brilliantly imagined collection of eccentrics, criminals, and squatters--he rises above the physical and human squalor with detachment, humor, and dignity.

Spizzerinktum: The Rapturous Delight of Growing Up American Reviews

Product Overview

Having migrated from the land of Wales in the early 19th century and settling in Marion, Indiana, this family raised six boys and one daughter. Their growing up years were hilarious, and at family gatherings everyone wanted the stories told over and over. This found me writing the entire account for a keepsake for the family and friends. Unknowingly, the story reveals the way the Powell families have raised their children to be honest, upright citizens with great integrity. With lessons for folk in all walks of life, this book will be a blessing to all who read it. It is more fun to read than it is to learning things. "Authenticity is the purpose of this book. For all the hilarious things in it, it's still a book of real success in raising a family."

Strawberry Lane: A Mystical Memoir of Boyhood in Rural South Texas Reviews

Product Overview

In a unique style that combines poetic prose, pathos, and humor, this entrancing mosaic of childhood memories lyrically details the songs and sorrows, the triumphs and travails, of a boy and his identical twin brother living through the 30s and 40s on a rural homestead in South Texas. With the constant support of their loving mother, the boys struggle amid primitive living conditions to meet farm-related responsibilities and educational objectives imposed upon them by their caring but stern, disciplinarian father. The author recounts his dearest and most anguished memories as a series of events, experiences, and observations that tell the story of his life from birth to leaving home at the age of nineteen. Vicariously return to your own delightful childhood years--those long-ago days when life was safe and sacred, slow and serene, and virtually free from drugs, depravity, and demonized crime. Find yourself saying, "Yes! That is exactly what I thought and how I felt when I was a child!"

The Maple Sugar Book: Together With Remarks on Pioneering As a Way of Living in the Twentieth Century (Good Life Series) Reviews

Product Overview

A half-century ago, the world was trying to heal the wounds of global war. People were rushing to make up for lost time, grasping for material wealth. This was the era of "total electric living," a phrase beamed into living rooms by General Electric spokesman Ronald Reagan. Environmental awareness was barely a gleam in the eye of even Rachel Carson. And yet, Helen and Scott Nearing were on a totally different path, having left the city for the country, eschewing materialistic society in a quest for the self-sufficiency they deemed "the Good Life." Chelsea Green is pleased to honor their example by publishing a new edition of "The Maple Sugar Book," complete with a new section of never-before-published photos of the Nearings working on the sugaring operation, and an essay by Greg Joly relating the story behind the book and placing the Nearings' work in the context of their neighborhood and today's maple industry.Maple sugaring was an important source of cash for the Nearings, as it continues to be for many New England farmers today. This book is filled with a history of sugaring from Native American to modern times, with practical tips on how to sap trees, process sap, and market syrup. In an age of microchips and software that are obsolete before you can install them, maple sugaring is a process that's stood the test of time. Fifty years after its original publication in 1950, "The Maple Sugar Book" is as relevant as ever to the homestead or small-scale commercial practitioner.
