Product Overview

This book is about a loving and warm family who made their home in the area of Tumbling Creek, Virginia in the early 1900s. It brings to life an era long ago, when there was time for porch sitting and visiting with neighbors. When molasses making and taffy pulling parties were the social functions. Ben Jensen was very strict in his ways. He was compassionate toward his family, especially his lovely daughters, Katie and Dolly. Mammy Belle and Daddy Jensen raised their children in the ways of the Lord, with church attendance a priority in their lives. One spring day while picking strawberries in the meadow below their home, Katie and Dolly Jensen had their first glimpse of the two brothers, Seth and Tom Hankins, who were fishing in the creek nearby. They didn't know that this day they had come face to face with their destiny. Three years passed, with only vague memories of the two brothers. Life continued on Tumbling Creek, and Katie and Dolly grew into beautiful young ladies. They often wondered what became of the two brothers they had seen fishing on that long ago spring day. Mammy Belle was shopping at the local general store, and she heard the news that the two brothers had returned from their three year journey across Clinch mountain where they had been employed on a cattle farm. Katie and Dolly could hardly contain their excitement. Soon romance blossomed, and life was never the same again. Follow Katie and Dolly as they face great challenges while maturing into womanhood. Rejoice with them when they find true love, and cry with them when tragedy strikes in the lives of each. This is a work of fiction with historical facts added in certain circumstances. Product Overview

If variety is the spice of life, my life was seasoned with more variety than anyone else's that I know. Struggle, joy, poverty, passion, change of scenery, fighting for justice, laughter, extreme sorrow, travel, awards, and many more chapters. I certainly have had a spicy life! It's funny, when we get older we can't remember what happened yesterday, yet we remember what happened over sixty years ago! A portrait of a life well-lived in Chicago, Phoenix, San Francisco, and San Diego -- with travel to many places around the world.

Steam Laundries: Gender, Technology, and Work in the United States and Great Britain, 1880-1940 (Johns Hopkins Studies in the History of Technology) Reviews

Product Overview

Laundries were once ubiquitous in British and American cities—products of the same historical process that created steel mills and railroads. Unlike the more familiar examples of industrialization, these cleanliness factories remained powerfully identified with domesticity. In Steam Laundries, Arwen Mohun explores broader issues of how gender has shaped how everyday work gets done, who does the work, and how the work is valued. The British-American comparison further reveals differences owing to culture, regulation, and social structure as well as the unexpected transatlantic character of this seemingly localized business.

I Must Remember This: A Southern White Boy's Memories of the Great Depression, Jim Crow, and World War II Reviews

Product Overview

Joe, George, and Richard Youngblood, three white brothers growing up in the rural South during the Great Depression, live in a world of paradoxes: love and hate; doubt and faith; and sadness and humor.

In his poignant memoir I Must Remember This: A Southern White Boy’s Memories of the Great Depression, Jim Crow, and World War II, author George Youngblood shares stories about everything from the brothers’ first awareness of death, sex, and race to the truth about Santa Claus. They smoke rabbit tobacco, tremble at ghost and snake stories, watch haircuts for excitement, get baptized, and gawk at locomotives and alligators.

Hard times draw the Youngblood family closer to their father’s black farm workers. With one family in particular they form a symbiotic relationship in the hostile world of poverty, disease, and segregation. I Must Remember This is Youngblood’s family story as they hope, work, and laugh with little cause—and succeed with basic honesty, respect, and an astounding sense of humor.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT: A Little Rich Girl Grows Up Poor in the Great Depression Reviews

Product Overview

Even in the worst of times there is hope-IF you are prepared to keep fighting. It was the worst of times-the Great Depression-and for one family it spelled disaster.  Within a few years they had gone from a beautiful home in Westchester County, to a dilapidated farm in Appalachia.  The father, once vice-president of a prosperous New York brokerage firm in the Chrysler Building, became dependent on handouts from relatives.  The mother went from buying expensive clothes at Lord & Taylor, to wearing cast-offs sent to her by an older sister.  And the little girl?  The little girl witnessed it all, experienced it all and overcame it all. Mary Anne Butler takes you into the Depression Era, and the years that followed, in a way that can only be done by a person who lived through it.  In addition to overnight poverty, she had to face religious prejudice, sexual harassment, and workplace inequity. Yet, through it all, one simple theme keeps shining through: Nothing is inevitable as long as you are willing to keep fighting. Down But Not Out is not just a memoir.  It's a message of hope to everyone in today's economic times. Utterly charming! Butler makes you laugh one minute and cry the next. You will be unable to put the book down.

Tales of the Trapline: A Romance of Old Alaska Reviews

Product Overview

"Sylvia, will you go out on the trapline with me this fall?" Vernon asked. "Well, don't you think we should get married first?" she asked, not wanting him to think that she was that kind of girl. His reply was quick in coming, "I already asked you to do that. That hasn't changed." "Well, in that case," she blushed, "the answer is Yes. Yes, I'll go out to the creek with you." Vernon wanted to get married right away, but there was one difficulty. . . . They were both young, adventuresome, and accustomed to hard work, hardships and depending on their own resources, as they made their plans that summer of 1937. Two months later, they began their trip to an isolated trapline cabin on Alexander Creek, 40 miles from Anchorage, which was to be their new home. But would they be able to face the challenges of traveling up a swift, winding stream in a 14-foot rowboat, of spending the winter alone without seeing another human being for weeks at a time, of making a living by trapping, raising mink, and fishing out of the stream in front of the cabin, of cutting trees and building a log cabin for their growing family? Would they escape the dangers of breaking through the ice during freezing weather, of crossing the frequently stormy Cook Inlet in an open dory, of accidents and illnesses with no way to call for medical help? Then there were the frustations of having four children in five years while living in a tiny one-room cabin, the tensions of the war years when all of Alaska was a war zone, the pain of losing Sylvia's younger sister to cancer. . . .

A Step and a Half Reviews

Product Overview

As a child, author Mickey Cobb grew up in poverty with his brothers and sisters in Georgia and Florida. He had limited mobility as a child, not walking until the age of four. His physical handicap was first thought to be infantile paralysis, referred to as polio throughout his life. It did not hinder his desire to be like his siblings and friends and participate in everyday activities throughout his childhood. He was encouraged by his parents and teachers to achieve his dreams. Mickey suffered more than physical difficulties. His socioeconomic hardships created further limitations as he grew up. He did not know many comforts and was not taught basic methods of living in society. He navigated the unknown obstacles in the various paths of life using hope and faith as his guide. The numerous life paths would lead him to education in many guises: the school of hard knocks, public education, higher education, experiencing success and failure. But all these roads lead to his one true goal: to become a professional athletic trainer in Major League baseball. Eventually Mickey became a trainer for the Kansas City Royals, notably during their championship season, winning the World Series in 1985. He details many stories and fond memories of his interactions with players, coaches, managers and support staff in professional baseball. Mickey takes you on a journey into the sometimes harsh outside world, then into the private, secure cocoon of a Major League clubhouse. Walk in Mickey's shoes and take "a step and a half" in the story of his life. Buckle up with Mickey as he takes a skydive at age seventy. Take with him that leap of faith. Jump with Mickey as he soars through life, and find out how the landing has affected him and all those around him.

Product Overview

The purpose of this book is not to embarrass or slander anyone in recording events of my early life, which I believe were unique in the circumstances I experienced. Through the years I have come to dearly love all of my relatives and appreciate the people with whom I was associated, both living and deceased. Whatever happened in my life, God turned into something beneficial and beautiful. Life is a great teacher; and in the mellowness of age, I find it worthwhile. My advice to anyone is to understand that nothing lasts. Change is inevitable. Only God, his eternal precepts for living, and the soul entrusted to a person will last forever. Choice is the great privilege given to each person.

Southern Fried Child In Home Seeker'S Paradise Reviews

Product Overview

Southern Fried Child In Home Seeker's Paradise is about the experiences of a sometimes lonely, but ever independent only child growing up in Mississippi in the 40s and 50s. On one level, Southern Fried Child is a charming account of the unusual experiences of an unusual child. On another level, Moomaw's stories reflect profound and valuable insight into the stratified social, political and denominational milieu of a small southern town after World War II and before Brown v. Board of Education. Written in the first person narrative voice of a precocious child, Southern Fried Child is story telling at its best. The stories range in emotional tone from "slap dab" funny to heart wrenchingly poignant. It's as if Jimmie is sitting beside you telling you her stories: about the dog who loved her too much, a game she played called "the embalming room door" her first cuss word, the phobia she developed after seeing her Daddy terrified of a dead mouse, and the contrast between her immersion in the Baptismal pool behind the pulpit at the First Baptist Church and the "talkers in tongues" who marched around the walls of Jericho at her Uncle Wamon's "holy roller" church. Moomaw writes, "you might be tempted to believe that the Gothic characters you see in the movies with the bad, bad southern accents are the products of the alcohol induced dementia of failed novelists turned B-movie screenwriters, but the South I grew up in was peopled with characters like Lola in "An Epitaph for Lola and Fonnie" They walked into and out of my Daddy's little country grocery store and service station every day of the week. People like them were the stuff of Truman and Tennessee and Willie and Eudora's fiction. They were the stuff of my every day life and reality"
