Chip Tales Reviews

Product Overview

Grandparents are story tellers. Early-day lessons are learned while listening in their laps . . . in the rocking chairs . . . by the winter fireplaces . . . on the summer porches. These pages just pass on some tales my grandparents, uncles, aunts, and others of their generation told. And a few of mine. The tales were sent one at a time via e-mail to my children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends scattered from Texas to California, Canada, Virginia, and Florida. As the yarns were received and read, the readers responded, provided critical comments, and helped compose a book of remembrances for those yet to come. There may have been some enhancement in the lore and spiel of those who came before me. There might be a wee stretch in some of my contributions. But mostly this is the way it was.

Callie Mae's Promise: How long is forever? Reviews

Product Overview

Nestled in the mountains of Harlan County Kentucky, is the shanty built by Clovis and Maude Elizabeth Creech. It houses their eight children, one of which is Callie Mae, of whom this story is about. Callie is a mentally challenged girl that grew into a beautiful young woman. In her care, because of a promise to her dying mother, is Angel Baby. Angel is physically challenged with cerebral palsy and fourteen years younger than Callie. This is a gripping story of their survival on the mountain. You will applaud their efforts to learn the written word taught by Dora and John, two dedicated school teachers that came to the mountain. You will walk with them to the ridge as they bury their loved ones, you will feel their loss. The black family, Leroy and Sadie Mayfield and their three sons, live two hills over. A highly segregated time that was ignored by the two families of dirt farmers who became friends. The sisters endure terrible hardships, however, they are bound by a promise for all eternity, and nothing, or no one can come between them...forever.

Growing Up Italian in God's Country Reviews

Product Overview

Growing Up Italian in God's Country: Stories From the Wilds of Pennsylvania details the struggles and triumphs of four generations of the author's family from 1891 when her great-grandfather Giuseppe Policastro emigrated from the middle Apennines east of Salerno to the virgin forests of North Central Pennsylvania to find work on the legendary logging railroad, the Buffalo and Susquehanna. Her great-grandmother Vittoria followed in 1895, walking 35 miles with four small children to get to the steamship in Naples. Interviews with family members including two great-aunts in their late nineties give this story an on-the-scene quality. Other family members tell their stories in their own words including the author's father, Sam Costa Sr., who relates how he was pulled from the raging waters of the 1911 Austin, PA. paper mill dam break which claimed 78 lives. There are also first hand accounts from other relatives and neighbors, some now in their eighties, who talk about growing up in the Twenties and Thirties during the Depression. The author concludes with her own memories of schooldays in the Forties, of the impact of World War II on their mountain towns, and the idyllic holidays and vacations at her maternal grandparents' home deep in the Susquehannock Forest alongside the Sinnemahoning Creek. Kerosene lamps, patchwork quilts and homemade noodles against a backdrop of dirt roads, mountain streams and a one-room schoolhouse figure in the telling as do a mangy bobcat, rattlesnakes and a railroad that wound around the mountain in what was once a booming logging town. Despite the hardships recorded, the book is laced with humor.

Southern Fried Child In Home Seeker'S Paradise Reviews

Product Overview

Southern Fried Child In Home Seeker's Paradise is about the experiences of a sometimes lonely, but ever independent only child growing up in Mississippi in the 40s and 50s. On one level, Southern Fried Child is a charming account of the unusual experiences of an unusual child. On another level, Moomaw's stories reflect profound and valuable insight into the stratified social, political and denominational milieu of a small southern town after World War II and before Brown v. Board of Education. Written in the first person narrative voice of a precocious child, Southern Fried Child is story telling at its best. The stories range in emotional tone from "slap dab" funny to heart wrenchingly poignant. It's as if Jimmie is sitting beside you telling you her stories: about the dog who loved her too much, a game she played called "the embalming room door" her first cuss word, the phobia she developed after seeing her Daddy terrified of a dead mouse, and the contrast between her immersion in the Baptismal pool behind the pulpit at the First Baptist Church and the "talkers in tongues" who marched around the walls of Jericho at her Uncle Wamon's "holy roller" church. Moomaw writes, "you might be tempted to believe that the Gothic characters you see in the movies with the bad, bad southern accents are the products of the alcohol induced dementia of failed novelists turned B-movie screenwriters, but the South I grew up in was peopled with characters like Lola in "An Epitaph for Lola and Fonnie" They walked into and out of my Daddy's little country grocery store and service station every day of the week. People like them were the stuff of Truman and Tennessee and Willie and Eudora's fiction. They were the stuff of my every day life and reality"

Ten Bridges Seven Churches No Stop Light Reviews

Product Overview

Ten Bridges, Seven Churches, No Stop Light is a riveting tale of small town people living exciting lives. This journey will have you hanging onto the farm sleigh as the team of draft horses fall through the ice. Everett and Rose take on the largest company in the world and you can work with them to correct the problem. Ring the bell on the assembly line and tell the car and truck manufacturers to fix it before you push the start button. Hide in the dark with Manley, a World War II sniper, as he tries to stay alive to get home. Go on the fall deer hunt, fall in love, with teenager Jake Payne and learn how the lure of the hunt is more than the hunt. Visit Ruthie in the auto wrecking yard as she teaches her younger brothers to take apart wrecks for parts. Gentlemen, there is only one Ruthie. Fall in step with Jack Wilson, the Ice Man, as he walks backwards towards global warming. He has more opinions than an arena filled with coaches at playoff time and if you can't find yours he will give you one. Try to catch up to Fargo and Rusty as the two brothers enter the monopoly world of alcohol. Like the Ouse River that flows through town and meanders on its way to Rice Lake, life carries our characters on numerous side trips where they did not plan on visiting. Hang on to your copy for dear life. These small town people deliver a big message. Make a bowl of popcorn, grab your favourite drink, and then curl up for a good read.

Aging With Grace: The Formative Years Reviews

Product Overview

Grace is a Baby Boomer and is aging. We all do. From birth and before, environment and genetics influence us. This explains why we don’t age the same. But, why do some of us handle the process differently? Grace Styls Behr is aging but is she aging with grace and style? To fully understand Grace, we step into ‘The World according to Grace.’ Aging With Grace: The Formative Years takes you back to post-WWII America, starting Grace's story with her genetic and biological factors: her parents, Zachary Styls and Liz Sparrow. The story is sad and at other times humorous. Grace’s childish thoughts are creatively unique and sometimes pathetically plain. Yet, you will be moved by a nostalgic story of this normal baby boomer as you hearken back to another time in America. The time of early television; true customer service; door to door salesmen; home deliveries and doctor calls. The new highway system brings increased mobility on land and the new consumers bring upper mobility and a hope for a better world.

A Memory at Large Reviews

Product Overview

A Memory at Large is the compilation of memories of a 67-year-old woman. These memories are based on truth as she sees it. She was inspired to write after the many encouraging side notes that Mrs. Parker had put on her writing papers at Mid-State College. She started writing short stories to give her daughter, Rose, an idea of what it was like to live in the late-forties. She had meant to only touch on the fun times, but as she wrote, she realized the not-so-fun times were creeping in and some of the stories were graphic enough to be upsetting to her, the writer, not to mention her daughter, Rose, also. She continued writing, thinking it would be therapeutic in some small way.

The Paw Paw Letters: Life Lessons for Aaron from A Good Place with Wise Folks During Hard Times. Reviews

Product Overview

The Paw Paw Letters, scenes of life values and process, combines humor, unimaginable real events, intrigue, plus surprise to visualize real folk just doing life in the 1940s and 1950s. The narrated epistles include parents venturing to discipline each other's children without fear of reprisal, volunteers aiding each other in times of pain and tragedy, and innovative ways to make do with what you have and make it through, all essential efforts for daily life and today worthy of practice if known.

The series of 35 messages, written to grandson Aaron, offer to him and other readers a link to a season quite different even to imagination in today's culture. More so, each value lesson of character woven into the epistles sounds an alert to American families vulnerable to the energies of greed, apathy, self purpose, and loss of integrity.
